French Bulldog Bibliography

French Bulldog literature, over the years, presents us with a fascinating panorama of the Frenchie, giving a sweeping view of the breed and its fanciers, controversies including heated arguments about Frenchie ears, and also of social and economic change. That is all very well if you know about, and have access to, all the rare books and articles. Know what you are looking for and take the time and money to hunt down and buy or sample some of the fact or fiction published about the French Bulldog, and then read them. Most books and other material, except for the most recent, are usually out-of-print, expensive (sometimes very) and are hard or almost impossible to find. You may not even know of the existence of many books containing Frenchie literature, through no fault of yours.

To try to help, here is a French Bulldog bibliography. Much of the earlier Frenchie material is rare and often inaccessible, except for the few lucky enough to have copies of the particular books. The following listing is governed by year of publication (rather than by the alphabetical order of title or name of author), with the earliest first.

1899 is a good starting point. It is probable that the French Bulldog’s jump into the limelight in the previous few years resulted in the breed getting into print in Country Life, one of the most respected English magazines of the day, and then being included in breed books. (Country Life continues to be published to this day. It is an outstanding English weekly magazine enjoying international distribution and reputation.)
